This article tracks James's imaginative relation to Honoré de Balzac from the scenes of childhood encounter with Balzacian Paris in A Small Boy and Others (1913) five critical essays on that James published between 1875 1913, focusing his attention elements bibliography textual history apprehensions otherness they produce. sustained engagement bibliographical condition Balzac's work models lifelong concern activity discrimination. It also invites us discriminate, as readers James, modes otherness: register not just alterity but an additional—the distinctive mode otherness, profoundly characteristic autobiographical writings, is indicated by phrase "and others."
